During Mark Sanford’s special election run for the House, I kept getting fundraising emails from the DCCC telling supporters how badly the race was going. At the time, I remarked that this seemed a bit odd.
Typically, email fundraisers try to make you give by focusing on positive goals. You know, like, LET’S MAKE JOHN BOEHNER CRY! or WE’RE ALMOST THERE, WE JUST NEED YOUR $3 TO COME OUT ON TOP!
But obviously, the “bad news” approach works too, because they keep doing it. Today’s email from the DCCC actually has “bad news” as its subject line, and points out that they were outraised by Republicans for the second month in a row. They don’t even mention that they basically tied the NRCC this month.

We’ll be blunt:
We got outraised. Again. After staying ahead of Republicans for the first five months of the year, Boehner and his big-money backers outraised us for the second month in a row. That’s unacceptable.
If you want to leave even a shred of hope on the table that President Obama’s second term has a chance, then you can’t take this news lightly.
So here’s the plan: we’re launching a $1 million Rapid Response campaign for the end of summer, and we’re counting on YOU to step up and help us do it.
Name: David Freddoso
Supporter record: 2592821
Suggested Support: $3.00
David, it’s time to step up: Chip in $3 or whatever you can right now to help us hit our Rapid Response goal >>
So far this year, over HALF-A-MILLION supporters have stepped up to donate to our campaign. That’s amazing — but it may not be enough.
If we’re going to do this thing, then we need even more people stepping up even more often.
Whether or not you’ve given to our campaign so far this year, right now we’re counting on you to do your part: [LINK]
Remember, it’s on you.
